What's Fostering?

What is Pet Fostering? - What does that mean?

Foster homes provide temporary shelter and care for animals who presently have absolutely no where to live. We will continue to look to permanent homes for these pets but fostering keeps them safe, and provides comfort and security, until they can be adopted.

Why do we need foster homes?

We have so many animals – especially cats – who have been abandoned or born without responsible owners and although they would make perfect pets, they are on the streets and targets for Pest Control. We don’t have kennel facilities, we don’t have many other options – we could ignore them, put them to sleep, or hand them in to Pet Shops.

Good foster homes are their best chance.

If these animals can stay in foster homes they can be care for and safe. They will be better of physiologically than being cages and healthier than being left out doors. It also means when potential new owners what to visit them they can find them and see them in a home environment. Because the foster family has got to know them, they will be able to help chose the most suitable new home for them too.

Sometimes we need foster homes to be on standby, if someone finds a wandering dog or some orphan kittens - and we have no where to put them - we would have to leave them abandoned unless we had a temporary home where foster care could be provided. A foster could help feed, and care form them until they are strong enough to be re-homed.

Sometimes we need foster care on a longer term. Many cats are abandoned by their owners and would have to live on the street – taking their chances with pest control. If they can stay in a foster home, they will be clean safe and loved while we look for a new permanent owner. It also means we know exactly where they are when people are interested in adoption.

Who Fosters Pets?

Some people don’t adopt pets because they’re worried they can’t take pets home at the end of a contract - they don’t want that responsibility and they don’t want to get attached.

These people are missing out - so are the animals in immediate need. We want to put you together! Most people are contracted for a year or two – just imagine - that’s 7-14 “cat-years” of care and protection.

Even short term fostering is a rewarding experience if you love animals and get pleasure in caring for them. It is not necessary to 'own' an animal to love one – nurturing kittens or feeding a half starved pup until they are strong enough to be adopted – you can get so much pleasure from helping them feel wanted and loved.

What’s in it for you?

Warm furry love!
– and the knowledge that there is one less critter safe from Pest Control traps, exposure or starvation.

Neutering, vaccinations, de-worming treatments and veterinary advice are all free to fostered animals. In the future we may even be able to assist with food and other costs too.

How can I foster a pet?

There are two ways your get a pet to foster. You can find and rescue one or you can take one for us.

Many animals who are in need are ignored. Pets who have been abandoned on compounds are often just removed by Pest Control. Hundreds of kittens die every year because un-neutered animals breed and there are no homes for the young. If you can start a responsible Pet Registration on your compound, assist with abandoned animals and bring them for neutering so they don't produce more - we can help. Contact us, let us know what you're doing / what you've found and we can work together. Even if you only pick up one abandoned animal and care for it until we can find a new home, that's one less pet in need.

During the kitten season we are swamped with babies, for the rest of the year we are picking up the cats who have grown up and been left behind. We find dogs locked in villas, turtles in the trash, birds abandoned in their cages. Often these animals need immediate care before we can find new homes. If you could provide a foster home, email us so we can get in touch.
